Kilauea volcano, Hawaii

Saturday, August 12, 2006 09:12 HST
Current Volcanic-Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Lava continues to flow through the PKK lava tube from its source on the southwest flank of Pu`u `O`o to the ocean. There are currently two widely separated ocean entries, East Lae`apuki and East Ka`ili`ili, both inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The NPS eruption crew reported Friday night that two East Lae`apuki entries (west side and on the point) were intermittently visible. Small streams of lava were also visible entering the ocean on the western side of the delta. A dim glow could be seen at the Ka`ili`ili entry later in the evening. From the pullout just upslope of the hairpin turn, one could see glow from both entries and surface flows behind the East Lae`apuki entry, but no lava was visible on the pali.

Viewing conditions at Pu`u `O`o crater were again poor overnight. Through the clouds, the web cam captured glow from the familiar vents - East Pond Vent, January vent, and South Wall Complex. Glow from the Drainhole vent seemed to be absent.

In the past 24 hours, tilt at Kilauea's summit has showed very slow deflation. Pu`u `O`o tilt shows minor variations on top of very slow deflation.

Tremor at the summit is continuing at the low levels of the past month. Pu`u `O`o tremor remains at a moderate level. Very few small earthquakes were recorded in the summit area south of Halema`uma`u in the past 24 hours.
