When the news (14,000 letters being sent to selected democrat registered voters in OC, CA) first broke, I was bewildered, beyond myself, trying to figure out what this is all about.
Putting on my conspiracy-theory hat, I'd drawn up a few possibilities:
- Tan Nguyen is just a dumb, stupid and inexperienced kid who has a lot of money to waste. He wanted to be in congress, and will (and did) try whatever means needed to get elected.
- Tan Nguyen was sabotaged by his staff(er)--probably a democrat, who wish to help reelect congresswoman Loreta Sanchez.
- Tan Nguyen was bank-rolled by the Vietnamese Communist Party. With their unlimited amount of money and human resource, they were trying to install one of their horses into Capitol Hill. This kind of tactics reflects their mentality/attitude: Bullying the under-privileged and having very little regard for the right of (naturalized) citizens to vote (which, most American would understand and respect).
- Tan Nguyen was sacrificed as a sure-looser, to drum up the "race card" (latino voters, to be specific) which will be a hot issue in future elections--by you know who.
Before today, I was thinking it's a bust for Tan. He's a gonner. His career as a mainstream politician in America is over. There's no hope. Zip.
Unless... of course, as they like to say in China, he can "find life through death", meaning fighting his way back to glory taking the least likely route. I'd mention that to him, if I were his advisor. Well, maybe a second-string assistant, putting up his campaign posters.
And that's exactly what he did. To be honest, I wasn't surprised. The guy has nothing to loose. Who's going to elect him any way. The best he could do (as urged on by the county's top republican) was to apologize then eventually fade into oblivion--painfully, in disgrace.
But it's a whole new ball game now.
He's now the devil. The fearless punk. The crazy kid. Out-of-control candidate?
Who knows. He might be "representing" quite a few voters out there, who dare not speak out (or support him) at the moment. But he might sure "as hell" taken on a new group of fan. And that's where his future will be.
Crazy? Stupid? Dumb? Inexperienced? I don't know about that. But I sure hope Van Tran (Tran Thai Van, CA assembly) wouldn't think so.
From virtually an unknown lad, who's been trying in vain a couple of of times to hold a seat as a public servant, overnight, Tan Nguyen has now upstaged Van Tran to become the most recognizable Vietnamese American politician--a congressional candidate--infamously known nationally, even internationally.
About my conspiracy theories: Either way, it's a good investment for the VC or the GOP. Bummer for the Viet oversea; most think they can overthrow (or pressure/negotiate to change) the current Vietnamese regime--relying on their ever-faithful American ally.
We may have chosen "them" an ally, again, but not to fight "their war".
I guess this time it's the race, stupid!
